Roof Installation Problems Part 1: Common Roofing Errors
Installation errors are, more often than not, the cause of roofing failure, which leads to unplanned roofing repairs. While these problems can be corrected depending on your warranty coverage, not having to deal with such problems in the first place is certainly preferable.
Signature Exteriors presents a two-part blog that takes a closer look at roofing installation problems, beginning with the most common ones:
Installing on Wrong Roofing Slope
Most roof installation projects are pretty straightforward, a lot of inexperienced installers tend to forget that all roofs have a slope, no matter what type it is. This usually happens with installations that involve flat roofs. While these roofs look flat, there is a minimum required slope to allow water drainage and prevent ponding. Certain roofing materials also have specific slope requirements and installing on the wrong kind of slope could result in an unreliable performance, or even shortened roofing lifespan.
Missing Components and Accessories
Some roofing components may be small, yet they play a crucial part in preventing potential roofing disasters. One of these often-overlooked components is the drip edge, which is basically flashing but for the roof’s edge. It prevents rainwater at the roof’s edge from seeping into the roof deck through capillary action. Installers who are used to other kinds of roofing systems sometimes forget to install it.
The same goes for leak barriers, which are waterproofing materials that supplement the roof deck. Not all roofing systems have this as a component and some installers tend to go straight to underlayment installation. While the lack of such components doesn’t have immediate consequences, it can help prevent leaks in case the outer roofing layers fail.
Wrong Installation Process
Different asphalt shingle products have different nailing patterns and it’s important for installers to know which pattern applies to which product. Misplaced nails can damage surrounding shingles, or attach the shingles they’re working on at a weak point. The latter can be problematic if a storm strikes the area, as improperly nailed shingles will likely be the first to go. Other products such as starter strips likewise have very specific installation instructions. Neglecting them could result in a roof that’s vulnerable to winds and water intrusion.
